12 January 2016: Burdekin producers value succession planning

12 January 2016

Producers in the Burdekin are creating a sustainable future for their farm businesses and families with the assistance of QRAA’s Productivity Loans according to QRAA Client Liaison Officer, Peter Crowley.

Based in Mackay, Mr Crowley travels to properties throughout the Burdekin Shire Council to meet existing and potential clients on-farm and discuss how low interest finance from QRAA can support their enterprise in 2016.

“My clients in the Burdekin have a very clear vision for their farm businesses and are using Productivity Loans to achieve their business goals for both the immediate future and 20 years from now,” he said.

“The most common use in the past few years, particularly with canegrowers has been families looking at First Start Loans to help adult children buy their parents out and take over the family farm.

“Younger families are also looking to the future with the help of a Sustainability Loan. This is to ensure there is a sustainable enterprise for the next generation to take over, when the time comes.” Mr Crowley explained.

In the past five years, QRAA has approved more than $5.95 million in Productivity Loans in the Burdekin to assist with succession planning, farm infrastructure and other activities to support growth.

In the same period, QRAA also provided over $2 million in loans and grants assisting primary producers recover from natural disasters and refinance rural debt in the Burdekin.

Mr Crowley also encouraged producers, especially beef cattle producers, to look at how a Drought Concessional Loan could help restructure existing debt on their farms.

“Overall I’ve found producers in the Burdekin are very proactive when it comes to forward planning and reducing the financial impacts of drought. I encourage any producer who is looking for more ways to ease the financial burden to contact me to discuss their individual situation.” Mr Crowley said.

The Sustainability and First Start Loans are initiatives of the Queensland Government’s Primary Industry Productivity Enhancement Scheme administered by QRAA.
